Hubbub

Through Sunday, August 3

Over the past year, we’ve heard lots of buzz about Boston becoming the Hollywood of the East. But long before the fancy trailers parked themselves on Beacon Street, the Color of Film Collaborative and ACT Roxbury were teaming up to produce the Roxbury Film Festival, which is marking its 10th year supporting independent filmmakers and bringing silver-screen notables to the city. In this milestone anniversary year, you can catch as many as 80 films (features, shorts, dramas, comedies, and documentaries) created by or about people of color. Actor Robert Townsend appears at the Museum of Fine Arts for the opening night film, Of Boys and Men, in which he stars. On August 1, catch part of the Music and Film series, which includes flicks about hip-hop. Troy Roland, an acting coach who counts Queen Latifah and Eddie Murphy among his acolytes, teaches a workshop that day. Saturday’s offerings include the New England premiere of Namibia: The Struggle for Liberation and a conversation with the writer and director Charles Burnett. Screening venues and ticket prices vary; visit www.roxburyfilmfestival.org or call 617.849.6326 for schedule and ticket info.
